This monument was dedicated in 1948 and presented to the Town of Lexington by the Lexington Minutemen.
Bashka Paeff (1889 - 1979), was an American sculptor active in the Boston area.
It was sculpted by Bashka Paeff, a Russian born American sculptress. The monument bears an inscription adapted from stirring words written by Lexington minister, Jonas Clarke.
"THESE MEN GAVE EVERYTHING DEAR IN LIFE YEA AND LIFE ITSELF IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMON CAUSE."
Inscribed on the back of the monument are the names of the men known to have answered the call to arms in Lexington the day the Revolution began. Those killed on April 19th, 1775 have a small star engraved next to their names, while the wounded have a small heart next to theirs. There were originally 77 names listed, a number that keeps growing as new research is done regarding those brave individuals who answered the call.
